VIN to identify engine and tranny?

I have multiple 97-04 F150 pickups.

Can the VIN be used to identify the engine and transmission?

Thanks !

The 8th digit of the VIN # can ID the engine. For trans, have to use the trans code letter on the door label.

Of course, a Ford dealer can enter the VIN into the whatsis system, and get a lot more specifics, since that looks up the actual vehicle build.

For the engines;

"L" is 5.4
"W" is 4.6 Romeo
"2" is a 4.2

There is also the 4.6 Windsor, but was only used in I believe 97-98

The 4.2 and 4.6 only came with a 4R70W, unless its a manual.

The 5.4 came with either a 4R100 or a 4R70W. It seems most of them after around 00-01 came with a 4R70W (unless a Lightning or Harley)
Don't quote me on that one though
