OK, let me just do a dump of info and see if you experts can help guide me through troubleshooting. My truck 2000 7.2 lariat, it was stolen by punching the ignition and they did a bit of driving, etc... It was recovered and fixed, not much in the way of mechanical was bad other than the ignition. When I drive it now, the ABS light would fade on, fade off intermittently, and at times stay on bright. It seems to be getting worse as it will come on and stay on, but then just go off, back on through that drive. Additionally, I noticed my speedo needle would go from 45 to 30 back to 45mph, while the accelorator stayed consistent. Les schwab was looking at my tires and said they would check the ABS, from their scan it mentioned a possible tailight grounding issue. He aslo checked the ABS sensor wires (did not remove the whee) and said they all looked intact and not damaged.
Is there a common ground that goes bad for the tailights and is that just a "goose chase" where there is something else causing this?
The last symptom but not really sure - is when I have the accelerator in a constant position, not moving foot, sometimes the truck will speed up or slowdown, just a little. It almost made me feel like I was going crazy, but it does truly do it.
Recommend you set yourself up to read codes on the ABS module yourself. We need that information directly to best diagnose this issue. See the link below. Arguably the first and best money (cheap) you can spend on these aging trucks.
Has it started randomly kicking cruise control off yet? The sporadic speedo is a common symptom of the speed sensor mounted in the top of the rear differential either failing or more likely a wire is rubbing somewhere it shouldn't. When that pigtail exits the loom it drapes through 1 or 2 little hangers before connecting to the sensor. When mine did what yours is, I found a wire right at one of those hangers had worked itself in two. Wasn't really visible until I got it out of the hanger and opened the little loom.
I had an intermittent issue with the ABS light on my truck coming on that I was suspicious could have been a grounding issue, but never fully got resolved.
What I experienced was that the light would be off after I initially started the truck and then after a certain time period would eventually illuminate. When it was wet outside, it seemed to stay off longer which made me wonder about a ground somewhere. Also, after I changed batteries, it would go a few hundred miles before it came on again. Before the battery change it would usually come on within 5-20 miles or so.
