ABS not working?

ABS not working?
'93 4.0L
ABS light comes on briefly with ignition, then goes off.
When braking on snow/ice, no pulsing brakes that you would normally associate with ABS. Feels like normal braking.

I think the ABS light should come on momentarily with the ignition switch. It's running its self test, and if all is OK, the light goes out. If it detected anything wrong, the light will stay on.
I'm not sure if I've ever felt mine activate on a really slippery surface either, so I don't know how to fully test its actual function.
