Thanks for the oil cooler location brian. I really appreciate that. I'm about to get underneath this truck and start pulling plugs and loosening drain plugs...
I just want to confirm though that with the rotella ELC, I do not have to add any additives?. I have a concentrated mix, I have 4 gallons, and then I will add 4 gallons of distilled. But that's all I have to put in there, correct? Should be done here in the next few hours.
When you do your final fill you won't get 4 gallons of distilled water in there.
As MARCSPSD said there will be water trapped in the system. There will be a lot less residual if you drain the block too but there will still be some in there none-the-less. That's why I do multiple flushes with distilled water (fill, run, drain) to make sure that what's left in the passages is as close to fresh distilled water as I can reasonably get it.
Since the system is 32.75 qts (8.2 gal) that makes it convenient math: 4 gal of ELC concentrate + 4 gal of distilled water = full coolant system (effectively). After adding the 4 gallons of ELC concentrate, the 4(.2) gallons of distilled water ends up being the difference between what's still in the system + whatever it takes to fill the system and top off while working the bubbles out. I always made sure to have extra jugs on hand (not a wallet-breaker at $1+/gallon for distilled water).
There's plenty of nooks and crannies for water to hide (and not get drained) so never got close to adding 4 gallons of distilled on the final fill (even with topping off for the few days following while the bubbles got worked out of the system).
I did notice that my coolant level is slightly lower than it was a year ago. I bought this truck in 2018 and I haven't touched the coolant. It look like it was in good shape, so I left it alone. Perhaps I have that cooler leak like you mentioned. If I do it's not too bad yet.
Most of these trucks the coolant level will settle below the cold fill mark. Mine will drop to an inch below the cold mark no matter how much I add. No worries.
