50k & 100k miles

Turned over 50k miles this morning at just over a year of purchase. 1,227 engine hours, 369 idle hours. No complaints...7.3 is a beast.

Got home yesterday and here is some misc totals to date of ownership.

50,426 miles ÷ 3,80.17 gallons of 87 octane = 13.26 mpg of combined city/ highway/ long idle time on job site, occasionally towing the toy (3k) roughly 24x a year.

This is traveling CO, NM, TX, OK, KS, SD, ND, MT, ID, CA, OR, WY, NE, WA so a variety of terrain and elevation changes.

oil changes_ oil filter (MC 820s), 8 quarts oil (MC 5w30 semi synthetic)
8,284 odometer
17,983 odometer (9,699 miles)
26,211 odometer (8,228 miles)
34,965 odometer (8,754 miles)
43,284 odometer (8,319 miles)
Oil minder showing 29% on display now, probably just change it today seeing there is no wind blowing outside. (7,162 miles)

I'll change it when the display shows between 85%-100% depending on weather/ location.

If there wasn't as much idling as I do at times the average mpg would be higher. Not bad at all for a 4x4 truck weighing 8,460# with 430hp & 475 ft lbs torque.

I believe the 7.3 is a worthwhile upgrade at minimal cost over the 6.2 with equal mileage and a little more power or atleast this is my experience.

At 50k miles, have you ever done a tank at 55 mph empty with low idle time on the highway? Those 4:30's will get 15.1 -15.6. curious to see the 3.73 difference for a true sense of mileage. I would guess 2 mpg better.

No never have at 55, most places in the west will get you run over at that speed.

I have had some tanks yield me 16-16.6 over the year on some long drives but conditions have to be right. I'm plenty happy in the 15 range which is what the previous 6.2 3.73 was doing especially seeing I'm always carrying weight in the bed.

Just trying to get baseline data. The 7.3 seems to have an interesting factory tune and mileage seems to be odd. I have run the same tests with every car/truck I have owned over the last 28 years. I'm working on an hypothesis right now.....

Are you finding the mpg at 55 higher or lower than one might expect?

Higher, but not as much as the 20% as it should. Also the 7.3 has an equal mpg range, not one constant speed, 55 to 61 mph. It might be the 4.30s and aerodynamics, but I need to see data on 3.73s or 3.55s. Working on the aerodynamic math now.

Solid numbers, hard to believe how efficient in which this engine operates. If it was on the dealer lots outfitted as is my F350, I would have bought it, though my 6.2L is doing the job just fine. Never hurts to have more though.

I finally changed my oil, procrastinated since 4/2. 51,762 miles, Oil life still showed 15% on the display which equaled 8,478 miles.

Put new tires on the truck today.

These are the Goodyear Wrangler Adventure A/T that came on the truck with 52,212 miles on them.

These are Goodyear Wrangler Ultraterrain A/T

We'll see how they wear.

How's the road noise on them? I tore a sidewall over the weekend on one of my current Grabber HD's. I was about to pull the trigger on a set of Cooper Discoverer A/T3 XLT from BJ's until I saw this. These look to be a couple dollars cheaper and Discount Tire has a lot more locations to go to if I have an issue when we're traveling, but they look fairly aggressive for highway/5th wheel towing

I was doing 75-80 mph and I thought they were quiet. I left the radio off to hear them, no problem with noise.

New tire update...after 10k miles on them they are wearing nicely with no cupping or chopping. There is no discernible noise from them going down the highway.

Being a little more aggressive I thought maybe mileage would suffer some but doesn't appear it is.

Just did a trip from ID to AZ and back to ID.

Travel to AZ
60,587 - 60,921= 334 miles, fillup 22.57 gal = 14.79 mpg
60,921 - 61,333= 412 miles, fillup 28.42 gal = 14.49 mpg

Misc local travel/ job site
61,333 - 61,592= 259 miles, fillup 21.46 gal = 12.06 mpg

Travel back to ID
61,592 - 61,996= 404 miles, fillup 26.21 gal = 15.41 mpg
61,996 - 62,344= 348 miles, fillup 20.82 gal = 16.71 mpg

Trip meter that was reset before leaving.

Economy reset before starting trip, wasn't reset during the refills.

Not bad at all.
