Just got done with a wash and wax to show off that 43 year old paint!
Probably more importantly my freshly rebuilt 460 is running awesome! It was my first ever engine rebuild so I’m pretty happy. As expected I had a few rookie mistakes but I’ve recovered from those and 1500 miles later I’m pretty stoked with the results. My rebuild included some very mild head clean up on the exhaust side, new mild cam, new timing set, new rod and main bearings, a ball hone job and new rings. All of this goes with the ZF5 I swapped in last year. So far 10-11 MPGs with conservative timing and AFRs using the Atomic TBI. Only 2000 RPMs cruising at 75 MPH with plenty of torque even at that low engine speed.
Great to see you back around, as always digging the flat bed. Nice color combo on the motor.
Thanks. I never went far just been busy I guess. I drove her right up to New Years which is when I pulled the 460 and spent about a month working on it and getting it reinstalled. I’m creeping up on 20k miles overall since I got the truck but only 1500 on the new motor. The old 460 was tired and had low compression due to leaky exhaust valves. Turned out cam bearings were trashed real bad too but I didn’t know until I tore it apart. Everything else was ok but can’t even imagine how many hours I spent cleaning everything that came out. Tons of carbon. Still has the stock rotating assembly. Also think I figured out the 460 came from an early 70s car based on the block casting and I think the rod bolts. Does have D3 heads but no provisions for emissions stuff so I think that indicates early 70s as well. Either way she had a lot of miles (wish I knew how many).
Nice truck, and really nice engine. I like the simple blue/black combination...looks real sharp, and sounds like it runs as good as she looks
Thanks! I debated colors forever but glad I picked the blue/black combo. It does run good. Honestly I still have the rev limiter set at 4500 so I have no idea about top end but down low it’s a huge improvement over the tired stock engine. She wouldn’t really even rev past 4500 before. The cam I picked has an operating range of 1000-5500 RPM and I installed matching valve springs so it should pull to 5k or more but I’m not in a hurry to break anything or just a big chicken I guess! The ZF5 hates RPMs to its kinda pointless to rev it and try to shift anyway.
Great looking rig! Sounds like you did a nice job on the engine work! You didnt change everything in the engine which probably saved your many dollars too!
Regards,
Chris
