I have a 1996 Bronco with the 5.8 and automatic transmission. When I bought the Bronco, I fell prey to the thought that removing my cats and installing true duals would give me more power and better mileage. I was wrong on both of these. Before, I had no CEL and it ran great. After they were removed, I got the CEL of P0171 and P0174. This is a lean condition on banks 1 and 2, not a missing CAT. I have tried almost everything to fix this. New vacuum lines, smoke test, intake gasket, fuel pump, and filter. You name it and I probably tried it. I took it to a shop and they kept it for over a week with no help. I tried the O2 sensor tricks and nothing. I was thinking I should install some high-flow cats to see if this will help, but I was told by Flowmaster (on the phone) that this will not fix my problem. He suggested I have the CATS programmed out of the EMC. Can anyone out here help me with this? It runs fine, cranks right up, and has no issues, except that dang CEL and it does run lean. I can smell it sometimes.
You cant smell lean, you can smell the PCM being told by the O2's, they are lean, and PCM will dump, more gas in, your MPG is prolly, tanking right now, programming it out, isnt a fix, the problem is still there, your truck will still run like death warmed over, put it back the way it was, both O2 feed the last O2, until it does again, your issues will gradually get worse, dont mean to be a party pooper
