1978 LN700 decode
Welcome to FTE!
You have an LN700, so you also have your own thread vs. being on an old F series thread.
N71 = LN700 gas
E = 361 4V XD FT gas V8
V = Kentucky Truck Plant
BJ5238 = 1978 numerical series
184 = 184 inch wheelbase
M = White
N712 = LN700 gas, 24,000 lbs GVWR
8A8 = standard cab without butterfly hood. I do not have the upholstery and seat info.
BL this code combines the transmission code along with another equipment code. Note the engine is marked as "XD". That and this code seem to indicate smog era codes. In prior years this would be an auxiliary transmission code, but B never designates an auxiliary transmission.
B = Fan clutch less sound pkg. or engine less Calif. emission
L = Transmatic (Ford rebranded Allison) model AT-540 automatic transmission. The MPC says this is a 6 speed but it's not. It is a 4 speed. Links below regarding discussions in previous threads.
53M
53 = Rockwell (Timken) model H-172 single speed rear axle, 17,500 lbs capacity, 6.17 ratio
M = 12,000 lb capacity front axle with note: "Optional frame color w/manual steering"
24000 = 24,000 lbs GVWR
74 = Seattle District code
Regarding the transmission. The MPC shows this as a 6 speed. All the other info you can find show it to be a 4 speed.
Go through this thread and find the AT 540 decoded. Post 7 and beyond will show Allison info, the Ford MPC, and several other posts from folks who have experience with the AT540.
