Hey everyone, I know there have been some threads on this but couldn't get a definitive answer. I haven't had to deal with emissions here in az since my truck is registered in a non emissions county. I will have to change that at some point though. I have a 78 f-150 with the 300 6. The sticker on the valve cover was basically gone but I do have a screen shot of it saying non catalyst. Also, it just says fuel on my fuel gauge, not unleaded only. New carb, and I don't have any smoke. Will emissions be a problem or will I be in the clear? I know a few factor go into it, but theres no way AZ can make me put a cat on can they? If it didn't come with one from the factory. I thought the 6050 GW made it a lot easier for us not to deal with the emissions crap? Any input is much appreciated.
1977 Federal emission standards cut off is at 6050 GVWR and above (more GVWRs) do not require a catalyst converter. Think you'll need a cat on your 1978 F-150.

Thats where I wasn't sure. Looking at my door tag, MFD date is 10/77, and the GVWR is 6050. So in theory that along with the non-catalyst sticker on the valve cover should give me a pass for no cat, at least I thought so.
Understand your truck was built 10/77 (October 1977), but it's an actual 1978 model year truck and the title indicates a 1978.
Hopefully it won't create a problem when you get it Smog Inspected, but if you are required to install a CAT, have a plan. Check your local exhaust shops, imagine a new universal Walker CAT is around ~ $370. plus dollars. You can check your local junk yards for a CAT out of an OBD1 (1992-1995) Ford F-150 Series P-U truck 300 six cylinder or 5.0L. The Walker CAT I bought a few years ago for my 1995 F-150 with the 5.0L engine was around $300, and the Walker CATs are normally good for ~ 60K miles.

Yessir, It is titled as a 78, which makes sense. I am hoping the non-catalyst sticker will exempt me from failing an inspection test for a cat, and would just have to deal with the sniffer part. I will go ballistic if they make me install a part that didn't come on the truck from the factory. From what I have read on some AZ sites, the emission requirements will be based on my year of truck. And if they look up the vin it should tell them it didn't come with a cat. But thank you for the useful info! Thats definitely worst case but I agree with having a backup plan. Much appreciated!!
I had some emissions stickers printed up a couple of years ago when we knew we would need to replace ours.
PM me your info. and we can work out a deal if you need a new one.
My understanding for Ford adding the F150 to the lineup was to avoid emissions on half ton pick ups. I think it's kinda like the Chevy "Heavy Halfs" back in the day.
