1978 emissions

My 1978 XLT Ranger has no catalytic converter, egr, no smog pump, no PCV, no nothing for emissions. Yes that's right no PCV just a factory rubber bushing in valve cover on passenger side that goes to carb. Not sure how that is supposed to work. This is my 2nd 1978 bronco...first was a 4 speed 400 with no emissions either. I bought it in 1984.

Latest Bronco was born in later months of 1977.

Now I do not live in a state that tests emissions but I have read some posts that people have commented that they have to prove their vehicle did not come with emissions equipment etc. Talk about valve cover stickers etc.

The best way to know if you vehicle came with catalytic converters is staring you right in the face as you drive your bronco down the highway.

Vehicles with cats will have fuel gauges that say UNLEADED FUEL ONLY.
Non Cat vehicles fuel gauges will say FUEL.

In the late 70s you could buy leaded or unleaded fuel and that pesky leaded fuel would destroy a cat so Ford had to put the warning on the fuel gauge.

Hope this helps anyone interested.

I was in your "Neck-o-Woods" last week. I'm in SoCal, and my 78' has a cat. The emissions stickers under the hood say "Catalyst". I cant remember what my original fuel gauge said (it's around here somewhere) I have a Dakota Digital dash now. Anyway the 2nd Gen Broncos are great. Tough and simple.

Yah, I would assume that California vehicles needed emissions, even in *78.
I have 3 2nd gen Broncos.
1st was a 78 4 speed Custom with no emissions, it burnt from a lighting strike on pole barn last year, so its sitting all burned up in back 40.
2nd is a 79 XLT Ranger with all the options including ....Captains chairs, Map pockets on doors, Factory CB system, AC, etc CB antenna broke 20 yrs ago and I cannot find a replacement. It has UNLEADED FUEL ONLY on fuel gauge along with emissions stuff all over it.
3rd I just bought, the one I am restoring from lug nuts to roof. No emissions on it so I will eventually need the valve cover sticker as P.O. rebuilt motor and its gone.
This one will be SPECIAL high elevation only motor build. 11:1 compression etc.

I'm so jealous. My 78 is like your 79. I would be happy with 9:1 and 0'TDC timing.

At 7800 feet 11:1 compression is like 9:1 at sea level so I can at least have a little power up here. Still going to run 91 octane, as the standard 85 octane will not be high enough.
