OK so I’m new to this I just got a 1999 F250

7.3 I keep getting codes for cylinder eight contribution blah blah blah the problem that I’m having is as soon as I get up to 30 miles an hour it cuts power starts running real rough and putting out white smoke that smells like fuel I replace the injector with another one from another truck before buying a new one and it’s doing the same thing

I

I replaced the IDM and cylinder six code went away but I’m stuck with number eight In the exhaust back pressure code is because it has the delete pedestal but from what I’ve heard it’s just a soft coat and won’t really bother me that much

Check the underside of the 42 pin connector at the driver's valve cover for any kind of damage. Might consider a fuel pressure test just to rule it out also. There is an easy method that uses the fuel bowl drain valve as a temporary test port. The instructions are in the tech section up in the stickys.

I believe a code on #8 is fairly normal but I’ll let the other fellas tell you for sure.

I agree with udsuth and would be checking fuel pressure first.

That cylinder 8 code is pretty normal depending on what CPS you have, IIRC....Cylinder 3 will sometimes show up too. I wouldn't worry about it.

I may be wrong because I often am, but a #8 cct failure is run of the mill, a high low buzz fail isn't though. How does the buzz test sound? You get 1 pissed off hornets nest then 8 individual uniform crisp rattles? If not then I'd suspect wiring first. The doggy power and smoke sound like fuel pressure problem though.

You are not wrong sir, not this time anyway... Cylinder #3 will often show "off a bit" during a CCT as well.

Mezzmer3325, a buzz test is a good and easy way to check the function of the IDM, electrucal side of the injectors and associated wiring. Udsuth78 has a great description of what a buzz test (in FORScan it is KOEO Injector Electrical Self Test) should sound like.

A link I took from the 7.3L PSD Tech Folder is pasted below, it has some relevant information to a CCT for you if you have a few minutes.

So if the fuel pressure is below 55 at idle what would be the problem i’m gonna replace the CPS tomorrow hopefully that clears it all up but I feel like it’s not going to

55 lbs is fine...basically, anything over 40lbs will run a stock truck

I believe the Ford manual says a minimum of 45 psi

Ford states a minimum of 30 PSI of fuel pressure. Although, we generally say 40 PSI to allow for human error, non-calibrated gauge readings and just to keep things on the safe side.

Need to measure fuel pressure at idle and also while driving when it acts up. Most likely suspects are clogged fuel filter, dying fuel pump, or clogged screens in the fuel tank.

Tell us what you get to narrow down the diagnosis.
