That fuzz is EXTREMELY common on new diffs on everything.

Im sure had you drained the fluid you would have been simply horrified...

Gears have a phosphorous coating to help them break in and keep them from corroding. This wears off as the gears wear in and gets held in the oil. Its not magnetic so, for the most part, its not held on the magnet...

HOWEVER it DOES get held on the magnet when there are metal powders(also produced during break in) and you get exactly what you have on the drain plug.

IMO and IME absolutely NOTHING to worry about.

NOW the underfilling, maybe something to worry about, maybe not.

There is a reason I change all diff's in all cars I own at 1000 miles... Get whatever nastyness out of it and make sure I have the proper level.

My 2021 F450 was a quart low. I changed it to Redline 75w140 when I got it home with 12 miles on it. I actually changed engine oil, both differential s and transfer case to Redline. My selling dealer did NOT do the pdi on my truck as I found several other things wrong. I put Magtecs on it for the magnets both front and back. I drained 15 qts of engine oil too. I put 13 back in and it's full, not over.

Mine is a 2017. Found this at 65K miles when I did a fluid change.

Is that a roll pin of some sort?

What gear oil are you guys using? Particular brand of modifiers? Any reason to stray from factory?

I’ll be picking my truck up and driving 600mi back home. I’d like to check the diffs & t-case before leaving the dealer. Are the fill plugs just a 3/8” drive?

Well, it looked like one to me.. took it to the dealer and they contacted Ford (I already had a case #). Anyway, they pulled of the rear cover and inspected the differential then put it back together. Nothing wrong was noted. Because I was out of warranty (I actually had 68000, and wty was gone at 65000) I had to pay $100 and Ford took care of the rest. By the way, I used stock motorcraft lube bought from RockAuto. Ford of course drained that and put new in. They charged 3 times more for the fluid than I had just paid. What a rip off.)

I changed mine somewhere around 2500 miles and used the Amsoil 75/140, as it was easiest for me to locate. If I could've found some Mobil Delvac, I would've used that.

Thanks for pointing this out. I checked and the front was full, but I had to add ~1.4L to the rear (M275). That means it was only 60% filled!

I also checked the transfer case, which is a little low - need to pickup some Mercon LV to see how low.

Now of course this makes me wonder if the transmission is also low.... if only there were a dipstick to check.

I used the off brand oreily oil and got 2 bottles of the limited slip additive from the Ford dealer. Works just fine.

That was the only choice as there is apparently a shortage of oil or was at the time.

ALSO how the hell can you check the transmission?

IIRC, my rear diff was a qt low and the t-case was 1/2Q low. Do wish there was an easy way to check the trans, as it's more than likely low too. Guess I'll have the dealer check it one day.

I had a 3.5 turbo f150 and no dipstick was such a pain. Talk about getting burns trying to check the fluid

This is the reply I was hoping for! Thank you. At 3k miles I'll change the diffs and transfer case with amsoil fluids
