Timing issue when plugging in the spout

Hey everyone again,
Truck is 1995 F-250 with stock EFI 460 on E4OD
So I set timing to 12 degrees with the spout out warm engine at idle.
truck off, pulled spout, set timing, engine off, plugged in spout and it jumps to 20-25 degrees BTDC.
Repeated steps but left truck running and as soon as soon as i plug in the spout it jumps, un plug the spout and it goes back to 12...

what could cause this, it has a bunch of new parts on the truck following the last big issue.. it ran great for awhile and now this, is it sensor related? IDK where to start..

Thanks everyone!

12* BTDC sound pretty far advance for a factory setting, what is factory setting?
Once you have timing set to factory spec then I would not worry were it goes unless it causes other issues.

So what was this "last big issue" and the bunch of new parts?
Have you checked the computer for codes?
If not I would check for them then clear them and see what comes back as I bet you did not clear it after the "last big issue".

Pulling the spout, stops the PCM, from controlling timing, and you want that, until you get it set, then plug the spout back in, and PCM takes over timing duties, depending on what your doing with the truck, back off to 11*, do you have O2 sensor? checked for codes?

No codes, I only checked because of the pinging that was happening.. Yes O2 sensors on truck

Timing is supposed to jump up when the spout is plugged in, if the motor pings under load back off the base timing and do another test drive. Factory base timing is 10deg BTDC, a stock motor should run fine at this setting so if you have to set it way lower someting is wrong. One possiility is that the outer sleeve on the crank balancer has shifted, this is fairly common on older motors as the rubber layer that bonds the two pieces breaks down.

I cant believe you dont have codes if it is pinging and has bad MPG.
There's got to be something going on to tell the computer to do what it is doing.
Bad MPG I would think its running to rich and the O2 should see this and send it to the computer to lean out the fuel.

Pull spark plug to #1 cylinder, first cylinder on passengers side. Bring dampener to TDC, put a skinny wooden dowel, or something small, into the plug hole until you hit the piston. Using a socket and power handle, rotate the engine slowly and see if the rod moves up, down, or doesn't move for about 2 degrees.

You want the dowel as far up as it will go, and hold there for a degree or two before moving. Rock crankshaft back and forth until the dowel is as high as it will go, and the crankshaft is centered between up and down of the dowel.

Now look and see where the pointer is. You could be off by several degrees. You can either replace the balancer, or make a new mark for zero, and a new mark with white paint for 10 or 12 degrees, wherever you want the timing set at, and time from those marks.

I agree with the following statements. Normal operation with the SPOUT installed. My 302/351 trucks do he same thing.

Have you tried a higher octane or different brand gas to see if the knocking goes away? Does it run better set at 10° BTDC?
