Starting with a 1979 F250 4 wheel-drive that has a worn out 460 in it.
I have acquired 1990 motor home with a low mileage 460 in it.
I would like to ask for opinions on doing a motor swap of these two engines.
Firstly is doing this even reasonably practical. Got to keep this project as low cost as possible.
If so, then I would ask for recommendations about which way to go.
Adapt a carburetor to the injection manifold or try to retain the fuel injection and deal with the fuel pumps and control system.
The EFI system in that '90 is essentially stand alone, it does not integrate with any other system on the vehcle there are just some wires to the dash gauges so it would be one of the easiest transplants possible. What trans does it have.. C6 or E4OD? Gaining overdrive would also be a hugh bonus if that is the case. The fuel system may be a little overcomplicated but you could similify it by using a '90+ F-series tank and pump combo, then it's just fuel lines and a filter between it and the motor.
The 87 up fuel senders read backwards and think a different range so you need to deal with that if going with a 87 up tank.
Only a few <87 trucks had a EFI pump in tanks and some were a low psi pump to feed a high psi pump mounted on the frame rail that then would feed the PFR and rail.
Now them early EFI trucks also had stand alone computer for the EFI I just dont know how hard it would be to get all the EFI stuff from the MH and try to install it in your truck? Also note on the early trucks if any sensor was not seen by the computer the computer went into limp mode, went rich and locked timing.
Some of the parts are getting really hard to find so take that for what its worth.
Also I seen it posted the EFI 460 motors have different heads that you cant bolt up a carb intake to so you would need to swap heads from yours to it but I dont know if that leads to other issues? Maybe if you did a Google search on this might come up with something that will work with a carb & intake?
Thanks for the replies, it looks like I have a lot of research to do before I move ahead with this project. I'll look into the options to find the simplest and least expensive way to merge the old and new(er) technology.
