So im trying to advance the timing on my '92 f250 460 to around 12-13. Ive followed all the instructions i can find on here.
1. Warm up engine
2. Check timing
3. Turn off engine and unplug spout connector and loosen distributor clamp
4. Restart engine and check timing/adjust to 12° mark
5. Turn off engine, tighten clamp
6. Start engine and check that dist didnt move when tightening
7. Turn off engine, reconnect spout connector
After reconnecting the spout connector I see that the timing has advanced another ~5 degrees and I get pinging uphill under moderate acceleration.
Should I set timing to ~7° so that when I plug the spout connector back in it'll be at 12ish?
With the spout disconnected you are setting THE BASE TIMING. When the spout is reconnected, the PCM has control of timing based on preset parameters. Try setting base timing to 10 degrees and check your results.
You can safely skip all the starting and stoping of the engine, worst that will happen is a code gets set. Factory base timing setting is 10deg BTDC, some motors can handle more.. some can't.
