Timing Advance????

What is the timing advance for a 91 f150 302 w/EFI? Been working on the truck all weekend and now it wont run because timing is off. Idles fine and when you rev it up it runs fine but once a load is put on it, it sucks. I have it set at 0 right now...please help, need to drive to work.

It should be 10* btdc at idle, make sure you disconnect the spout connector before you check it.

jess, i just got done timing it to 10 degrees btdc (with the spout connector removed). when i hooked everything back up and ran it, it ran like a sports car. feels like a new truck again. granted i just replaced just about every part and sensor on the ignition and vacuum systems but hey, it was worth it. let me know if you continue to have problems.

jon1221 , if you think it runs good now put some 91 octane in the the tank and bump the timing to 14* you'll feel a nice increase.

No it wont do anything to the idle speed , you're truck will have alot more pep with 14* timing. One thing though if you get any engine ping back it off 1 degree at a time until there is no more engine ping. There are other ways to unleash 5.0 power if you have any questions feel free to ask

Get a K&N drop in air filter and cut the bottom off the airbox off, you'll feel that one

actually, i already installed a K&N FIPK. That helped. Question: how far is the butterfly valve on the throttle body supposed to open? when i revved the engine manually with the intake hoses off i noticed it didnt open very much when the engine was at high rpms. I also noticed that most of the air is entering through the IAC valve. Is that normal?

I wouldn't check it that way, with the engine not running and the intake hoses disconnected manualy open the throttle. The butterfly should be fully open, if not some adjustment might be necessary.

oh it will fully open with the engine off but with the engine running it doesnt move much to get high rpms. what can i adjust to increase the airflow through the butterfly valve and bypass the IAC? keep in mind the IAC is brand new.

The butterfly valve open and closes with the throttle cable as far as I know. I would reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for about 30 minutes to start back off at ground zero. That will help your idle normalize faster.
