Fuel leak

I’ve got a 1995 f250 with the 7.3 powerstroke. It’s got a pretty decent fuel leak coming off the starter and tranny. It doesn’t drip till about 3 mins after start up. And after the engine is at operating temp it slows back down but still has a drip. I was wondering what common fuel leaks would be to start checking and diagnosing this problem.

Do you still have the mechanical fuel pump in the truck? Take a look in the valley of the engine. Your leak is probably coming from the valley and running down the back of the engine and transmission.

Yes the truck has the mechanical pump. And shortly after I made the post I traced the fuel pump to the highest point which is the valley as you said. I know the fuel bowl has issues but before I dig into is there any other sources I should be checking.

Clean out the valley well and run the truck while your watching. It could be the pump or the filter bowl. I had a pump that was weeping fuel and leaving a puddle under the truck.

On mine it was the fuel restriction sensor on the bowl that was leaking. I eliminated it and replaced with a threaded stud.

Finally got a nice enough day to get some work done and after cleaning it out and watching for the leak it appears to coming from the fitting shown in the picture.

actually I’m not too sure about that last message it appears to be coming from higher up. Closer to the fuel filter housing I see it dripping onto one of the hoses

The last picture is of the fuel bowl vacuum sensor, a known leak spot. you can remove it and replace with a 1/4 inch pipe plug. Be careful while tightening the plug as you can split the bowl by getting it to tight. The banjo bolt in the first picture can loosen and create a leak also. It might not hurt to try and tighten it while you are there.

If you're planning on keeping the mechanical pump and filter housing, it may not hurt to change the fuel hoses and o-rings in the filter housing.

The seals where the hard lines connect to the back of the cylinder heads were rotten on mine, but somehow only the passenger side was leaking a little bit. The seals are cheap, I got them from riffraff.
