1999 V10 in a Winnebago motorhome. Recently bought this and was wondering how the V10 likes to be driven? Does it like being rev'd up or more liking a lower RPM? I'm in wyoming so driving at altitude up & down mountains and Forrest roads. Will tow a 4 wheeler trailer.
These engines like to rev, don't fear it screaming up a hill. That being said have you done any prevention maintenance?
At least Torque the spark plugs to 25 ft-lbs, carry a extra coil pack in the glove box; I and many others use Denso, they manufacture the Motorcraft coils, if purchased on Rock Auto, significantly cheaper.
I have a 2000 Allegro 33 with the V10 towing a car, actual weight around 20,000 lbs, it does like the RPMS to get up the hills. We took a trip from NH to Yellowstone, down to Grand canyon, Antonio Texas and back....7000 + miles. It did fine on the entire trip, did find one portion that had 8% grade for miles, shifted it into second and held about 3300 -4200 RPM for that entire grade. Don't be afraid to let it rev especially on the downgrades (use your gears ). Enjoy your MH
An ex coworker had a f150 for towing..but was always sad and embarrased because the diesels left him in the dust..He had a line on a 6.0. i told him to swallow his pride and keep the F150..because the 6.0 was a pile..He purchased it..and after being stranded 2X in the middle of nowhere..He said i was right...I see, pretty much always on the side of the road..with the hood up,ruining weekends, diesels...just saying, if you do not use it alot...A gas sucking sucking V10 pretty much gaurantees you will get there
I read that the early V10's can blow out a spark plug. In fact, it happened to my brother-in-law. They repaired it with JB Weld . . . and it is still running today. What is the cause of this? What causes the threads to give out?

All Modular Motors "can" blow a spark plug, its not really that common although reading about it might mislead someone into thinking its an epidemic. There has never been a single definitive answer to why---too much speculation from owners and a few for-hire mechanics.
Those with Modular Motors with the 2 valve heads built between 1997 and 2004 or there abouts seem to suffer this most often, by the later years any 2V heads heads had undergone manufacturing changes pretty much eliminating this as a problem.
I've always speculated it was due improper original installation while the engine was being factory assembled and/or lack of maintenance where spark plug torque was never checked or neglected too long after symptoms appeared. Most of us have adopted a method where Motorcraft plugs are used, a dab of nickel-based anti-seize on the plug threads before tightening them to 23-25 ft/lbs using an accurate torque wrench.

IMO it has to do with the undertorque specification recommended from the factory combined with the few threads the early engines have.

JB Weld is just about the worst possible choice for a spark plug blowout repair that I have heard of. What is his plan for his next spark plug change?
