I gave an 05 F350 cc 6.0 4x4 that has been bullet proofed and tuned. I giggle almost every time I drive it. It scoots and is reliable. I have owned it for the last 5 years. I have had 4 2v V10's in the past. They were extremely reliable but slow in comparison. Now with diesel running on average $1.20 more than regular gas, I'm thinking of switching back to an 05 F350 cc 4x4 V10. My dad will give me his 05 with only like 60k original miles. Is supercharging or turbo charging a viable option for a 3v V10? And can it be done in the $5k range? I couldn't find the info I'm looking for using the search function.
I had a friend who bought a motorcycle to save money driving to work. He lived less than 2 miles away. Truth was, he wanted to justify buying a motorcycle, because he wouldn't live long enough to save enough money in gas to cover that bike.
You can buy an awful lot of diesel for the cost of supercharging or turbocharging a V10. I don't see it as justifiable, but getting a low mileage truck, where you know the owner, is a better reason.
First thing you should consider is cost of fuel per mile, not per gallon. My 2000 f450 with a v10 will get 10mpg unloaded down hill with a tail wind. Unloaded to me means, just my normal stuff; tools, chains, etc. Truck weights about 9800lbs unloaded with a full tank. My very limited exposure to diesel is that all else equal, they typically get better fuel economy.
Figure out average MPG for each rig and do some math. You might be surprised with the results
As a hypothetical example. My truck gets 10mpg, if it had a diesel it would get 12mpg. Keeping the math simple, gas is $5/gal and diesel is $6/gal.
120 mile trip takes 12gallons in my truck =$60. Same trip takes 10 gallons in a diesel =$60.
In this example, fuel costs are the same (@ $0.50/mile) and the diesel pulls harder making you grin.
Use some real world numbers and see what the true comparison is.
I have an 04 F350 with the 6 liter it is not a daily driver and hasn't been since weve owned it. Also the diesels ARE NOT recommended as daily drivers for such things a sgrocery getting and stuff like that. I also own a 94 ranger with the 4.0, basically not a daily driver anymore since the wife only drives an automatic which is now our DD since we have both retired. Many folks criticize the 6.0 because they require regular maintenance and a re a little more costly to service. $100 vs 40 for oil change etc. I have had the egr replaced along with the oil cooler also head studs and gaskets. The tech upgraded all the tsbs from ford and the truck is our main travel vehicle since it is comfortable and roomy. We just got a Hyundai SUV for some of our trips so that adds some more flexibility. We no longer tow a TT but still dont want to get rid of the truck I run it on the highway about once every 3 months. We towed our SIL new trailer from texas in Oct to here in AZ. Didnt miss a lick.
We also own a E450 in a motorhome and it is not economical as noted above. The guy there said he gets around 10, we get around 8-9 when we use it, plus I am not impressed with the V10 just not something I care for. Runs out of capability at altitudes like around Denver and such. So as recommended above find a smaller DD and be happy. BTW my ranger averages around 15 or so in town and around 20-21 on highway, not bad for a vehicle with over 300000 miles on it!

Assuming, since you have owned V-10s, that you are aware the 6.8 gets lower MPGs than the 6.0…….
Assuming that you understand that supercharging or turbocharging the 6.8 would reduce its MPG even more……..
Assuming that you are contemplating this due to the increase in price difference between gas and diesel, like you said………
I have to assume that you aren’t very good at math.
