What to check with replacement engine?
I have an opportunity to look at a running engine on a wrecked truck. ~200k miles. Want to make sure my checklist is in order:
- Check oil, auto trans fluid, coolant level. Look for metal in the fluids, look for oil or diesel in coolant.
- Check air filter, turbo compressor blade condition; has it been dusted?
- Start engine cold, take note of how hard it is to start, what quantity and color of smoke it spits out. Check cranking consistency by ear.
- Pull codes.
- Measure blow-by with gauge.
- When engine is warm and Forscan gauges up, put in drive with foot on brake, rev it up and note behavior.

Ask for it to be cold when you look at it. Disconnect the 42 pin connector so it will not start while listening for consistent RPMs. Ensuring good compression is prolly the most important part of the endeavor. Everything else bolts on.

I would like to add, take your time. If the seller is rushing you, saying they don't have time, might be best to leave it.
