how do I know the truck I'm looking at has a healthy motor? the seller most always tells you what you want to hear.
A few minutes spent with a gasser and I could confidently tell you what shape its in, especially with a cold start up. check the plugs, check compression, start it , listen to the oil pressure come up, check the exhaust, go for a spin. doing this a knowledgeable guy could tell you alot about the engine.
What do you diesel guys do to determine the health of a IDI, tubos included??
take the cover off the air cleaner and inspect the turbo see if the inside is excesively oily or dirty, grab the center nut and see if you can detect any axial or radial play. check for alot of blowby from the crankcase. check the condition of the coolant with a hydrometer; poor coolant condition might warn of system problems.an oil sample test could tell alot too and doesn't cost what an engine would. some heavy equipment dealers have access to a lab for this
Another thing I like to see is a good oil pressure will cranking. Not running at an idle. When ever I build an engine I never let it fire off until I get oil pressure with the starter. If you can pull a valve cover off. You will see a sludge problem or a coolant in the oil problem there if it has been around for any length of time. Nothing is fool proof and it is always a chance. I have seen new engines in trucks scatter while delivering them. Milage can be very deceiving also. It is so easy do damage an engine.
If you know gas motors then you know more about a diesel motor then you may think. Most things apply to both.
I'm headed 50mi out of town this afternoon to check out a 94 turbo with 150K (lower mi than I expected to find)
I'm gonna take a couple screw drivers and a cresent wrench, hope that will get the air boot off so I can check the turbo. Ive never even been under the hood of one of these.
Look at the normal stuff. If you see alot of wear or little nicks on the compressor side vanes then it has had dirty air run through it. That means the cylinders ate the dirt too.
Make sure the turbo spins good and free. The rotor will feel like it has alot of radial play. That is normal. When they are running oil pressure will firm it up.
