Ok, so I crawled under my 87 project (CCLB DRW 6.9 ZF-5) yesterday and noted that one freeze plug was MIA and another one had a half *** expanding rubber parts store plug.
I'm inclined to pull the engine to change them all and freshen up the engine, but wanted to check to see if anyone here has changed freeze plugs with the engine in the truck.
Some sort of major work will be done. Either trans or engine comes out. You could try accessing it from the wheel wells, but on the driver side they are behind the oil cooler. You would most certainly have to remove exhaust manifolds, oil cooler, or the trans depending on which one is getting replaced, or all of them for easy access without removing the engine
Thanks, @Wheeler.M1 . I'm fine with having another excuse to pull the engine.
@Scott in TX My home base is actually in San Antonio, Texas, which is a bit closer, but the truck and I won't be there until I retire from the Army in 2023.
