We've recently bought a 1973 F100 Ranger XLT for $1300. The truck has great bones. Some surface rust on the body, rustless frame (it was oil coated), 73k miles, 360 V8, and dual exhaust. All was going well until today when we discovered that the transmission doesn't work properly and then a freeze plug decided to blow (the rest aren't far behind). Now we must pull the engine and my question is: Is it worth it dropping the engine and fixing everything, or selling it as is? I might be able to get my local community college to drop the engine and trans for free. I cannot decide on what to do... I was hoping from some insight from some experts that have gone through this before. We've only spent $2000 in total so far and I don't want to spend any more than is necessary. Thanks.
ello Candy Cane fans! Yes I'm still here, I have been busy with work and I also have another classic car that I have been working on as well. Last summer I finally fixed my leaking freeze plugs without pulling the motor. I removed the wheel, removed the right side motor mount and supported the engine with a 2x6 that I was able to wedge against the block. This allowed me full access to the freeze plugs. They where so badly corroded that one of them let loose on me just as I was scraping the rust away so I could see the plug. Removal was pretty easy but installing the new ones was a bit of a challenge that involved some cussing but eventually prevailed. So prof positive this can be done.
