I have a 1998 F150 XL 4x4 which has the cut outs for the driving lights but has black plastic inserts in its place. This is how the models came from the factory if they didn't include the lights. The 4x4 came with the bumper pre-cut.
I was able to find the driving lights for it along with the head light switch with the fog light switch built in for 1998 and the connectors look exactly like the ones in my truck now. The backs of the existing switch and the new with with the fog light included have identical pins sticking out the back. So my question is, is there existing wiring I can tap into to make these work as it seems that the wiring harness going to the switch is already configured to accommodate it. I can get the connector that plugs into the light bulb assembly with two leads coming out of it, so is it as simple as running the leads somewhere and using the existing wiring harness?
The fog light operate via the "fog light relay" which is in the Power Distribution Box under the hood, it is relay 206. This relay is controlled by the fog light switch wire color wht/blk, the fog light switch get it power via fuse 27 located under the dash, wire color wht/blk. I don't know if the wiring harness is setup for fog lights if they were not factory installed, I would assume that it would be. All one would have to do is look in the harness for connectors with the wire color of TAN/ORN. You may have to install relay 206 and install a 15A fuse in location 9 of the Power Distribution Box.
I know that when I put my tow package in all I had to do was to install a couple of relays and a couple of fuses, the harness was already equipped with the wiring, the same maybe for the fog lights.
I was under there yesterday for some other reason and I was looking for the wiring harness for the fog/driving lights and there isn't anything there. I am going to start from the headlight/fog light switch and work my way forward. At the moment I do not see where a wiring harness can plug in. But I will keep looking. I will also look into the relays and fuses. I would think that most of the stuff is there except for the fuses, relay and wiring harness. I will provide an update when I have one.
So I waited until a buddy of mine was available to help me with this and what we found was interesting. my 1998 Ford F150 XL 4x4 was pre-wired for the fog lights in the cab only and not to the bumper, which I thought was weird. What I mean, is pulling the headlight switch out, it had power run to the fog light switch to both turn the fog lights on and power the fog light on the switch itself. The fog light on the switch illuminated when switched on after being plugged in. There is no wiring behind the bumper for the fog lights as everyone says their should be. Coming out of the frame is only two looms. One for the headlights and one for the side markers. Did Ford only do half the job with this truck?
So can anyone provide any information as to where this stuff would need to be plugged in? I have everything to make my own or I might purchase a replacement one online but want to make sure I know where it connects first.
The second harness you are looking for would come from the underside of the fuse panel where the foglamp relay plugs in
Go find one at a wrecking yard
That might be easier than wiring it in and would look factory
Good job finding that pretty clean truck
On my 01 F150 XL RWD I was wired from the bumper to under hood fuse box but not from either the under hood or in cab fuse box to the switch. I have yet to try and add a single wire from the under hood fuse box to the switch so that I can use the factory harness as it looks like it’ll be a spaghetti mess of wires. I ran a new harness to the switch (pin #5 iirc) and another wire to the in cab fuse box via add-a-fuse to pin #2. I may have the pin locations backwards for those looking to do this. I believe the 97-98 years have different switches and pin layouts.
On my 1997 4x4 all I had to do was get a light switch with the fog lights option. First one I pulled from the yard was from a 2002 and didn't have the same connections. Returned it for one off a 97 and plugged it in turned on the fog lights and checked with my volt meter if I had power at the blue connecters behind the bumper and I did. That's all it took on my truck, didn't need to add a relay or fuse in my case.
