I've been trying to dig a little deeper into compatibility issues with the 5.0 to 5.8 swap. If I understood Conanski's comment correctly, my current 5 spd transmission should mate fine with a similar year 5.8 motor as long as I get a flywheel/clutch suited for the 5.8 vs the 5.0. That sounds relatively easy to me, but am I missing something?
Also, I'm seeing some F250s for sale with 5.8 that could serve as a potential donor vehicle. Some of them have a 5spd manual transmission. Does anyone know if the 5spd in a heavy duty truck would be different than what came in my Bronco?
Engine balance is different between the two motors so the flywheels are identical except for the counterbalance weight built into it, but that is enough to require a different flywheel and yes it's that easy.
Yes the trans is different in the HD trucks, they got a ZF5 gearbox with a granny low 1st gear and an optional PTO while your truck has a Mazda 5sp. The ZF is better for HD uses but is a bit clunky to use, while the M5OD is better for driving around.
