I'm sure this has been asked before but i did search and i can't find anything out about this. My 302 is about done. A guy i know at a machine shop has a 5.0 HO from a mustang and he claims will work in my truck. He said for $500, he'll do all the machining and cleaning and i can rebuild it. It's EFI, just like my Bronco. But i have heard that a cam from a mustang is not appropriate for the Bronco. So, i just want some opinions here. Is it worthwhile to put a Mustang 5.0 in my Bronco? It's a roller motor, which i know is a plus, but the cam issue concerns me. Is there more that i'm missing here, or is this just a plug and play and my truck will work wonderfully? Thanks for the help here.
The trucks is mostly used for fun and towing stuff when needed. It's not a daily driver. Don't know if any of that matters, but though i'd mention just in case.
Thanks again.
but if you wanna go this 5.0 route you can. its a drop in swap, and if you are to run some 1.7 rockers it will make that cam better. just reuse your efi stuff from your current setup and you will be fine
wow i didnt know that i dropped in a 5.0 from a crown vic of the same year in my 89 cool to know i coulda done the same with a 'stang engine for 600 bucks cheaper! lol
I agree with Kem - if you're going to swap it, get a 5.8. The effort is a little more, the mileage is the same, but the power difference is more than noticable.
Okay, say the 5.8 is an option? What does a "little more" effort mean? I love the idea. I had a 5.8 in my '84 and i know that there is a big difference. So Kem' and Andym, what would it take. I'm gonna do some searching and stuff now. Let me know what kind of stuff i'd need to change or modify please. Thanks for the idea and help
You can check my gallery, I did it, of coarse mine is carbed. It no extra effort except $$ I went with the bassani headers and y-pipe.
If you get that 302 HO cheap enough I think that would have some good power. I have seen some 302 broncos get up and go nicely.
I've heard the HO can put out some good power. But my main concern is the cam. Is the cam in that 5.0 (out of a mustang) right for my truck? It's a toy for mud and some towing. I would think a Mustang cam would have a power range that is in a higher rev range than appropriate for a truck. Let the opinions fly please. Thanks
Josh
yea, i think you should go with the 302 ho, put in a nice cam, they are not too expencive. the ho has alot of potential, the heads flow better than the stock bronco head. plus you cant beat the price
they are running the same e7 heads Jet. the difference is the cam and being roller vs flat tappet cam.
to do the swap find a complete efi 5.8 out of a bronco,f150-350 or even van. any year after 88 would work. get a flexplate from an 80's crownvictoria with 5.8/AOD combo. you will also need an ecu from an efi 5.8/C6 combo which shouldnt be hard to find either. your stock mounts, wiring harness, accessory brackets, fuel lines will all fit onto the 5.8. its all a drop in basicly. no more time or money compared to doing a 5.0 swap. do a search here and on the web for 302-351w swaps. you will find lots.
