First off hi everyone. I have been here for a little but haven't posted with work and all. I have a 1991 f150 with a 5.0 302 efi. It just started to have some issues with the oil smelling like gas and some grey shavings on the dipstick. I'm guessing maybe a head gasket or piston rings, but being it's such a beater it doesent really feel like its worth fixing, would it be possible to take off the efi system and put it in my 80' bronco that has a 302 non efi and just swap the efi system, what would this entail and how hard?
Welcome to FTE and the Big Bronco Forum. It would be simpler to move the non-EFI long-block into the EFI-equipped truck but here in the Bronco forum, I'm gonna say, "Keep the Bronco at all costs!" Swapping the EFI into the truck that doesn't have it can be done. Its just more labor intensive. You will need ALL of the engine electronics, the computer, the EFI intake and throttle assembly and the ENTIRE fuel system from the F-series including the fuel pumps from the tank and frame rail. Since you are dealing with a 302 you will need to drill and tap a mounting hole for the knock sensor in the non-EFI block. The stock location on the aft skirt of the block is probably the easiest place to do it.
I won't sugar-coat it and say it will be simple but if you are up to the challenge, it can be done. I am certain there are details I am missing in this short response but let this thread go for a few days and see what else the guys & gals here put out there for you.
Much appreciated. Really wanted to swap the 302 out of the bronco and do a 351 swap but wife doesen't want to fix the truck or buy another engine. I will see what others say as well.
If you are going to swap (and you get permission), consider a 300. Not as fast but pull their hearts out for a quarter million miles or more before you have anything major to do to them. Carburated versions are a dime a dozen since there are so many speed freaks wanting to dump them for big fuel-hungry V8's.
The 300 is an inline 6 cylinder. The accessories will all swap but you will need the bracketry for them. It would entail a computer and engine wiring harness swap IF you wanted to keep a fuel injected engine in it. But then, a 351 swap would require much the same except for the harness. As I recall you could use the 302 harness on the 351 and just cut out the knock sensor connector. The EFI 351W didn't use a knock sensor but the 302 did.
