My 49 is just about disassembled and looking for advice on to go power steering or leave it stock. The truck is pretty rough now and will never be a concourse stock restoration, just a fun father son project to grab Ice cream in on weekends.. Will probably be keeping the 292 and 4speed non syncro trans, it runs great and fun to drive. I really don't think I need anything faster for where I'm going with this. . More than likely the suspension will remain stock leaf springs. Is power steering (Toyota box) worth doing or does the stock steering do the trick. Likely I'll have to rebuild the stock box and change all the other steering components anyway. Thanks for any advice
If you do not put radial tires on the truck it will steer easy. I had radials on my 54 and regretted it. When they wore out I bought good bias plies and am very pleased with them.
The secret to driving a vehicle without power steering is to think ahead, where you never have to turn the steering wheel while the vehicle is not moving. How many years did some of us drove this old iron before PS became the norm?
As easy as the steering was on my F2, I wish I had left it alone. I bought the power steering kit from mid-fifty but just don't think it was necessary now.
