how many of you are running the stock manual box and do you hate it or is it not to bad and you dont mind it. reason i ask is some jag bag cleaver swinging hack job put a ford power stering box in my 55 and its got a bracket that hits the leaf spring and the way its mounted thay blew chunks out of the frame with a cutting torch the list of problems it causes goes on and on. I can get a stock box for reasonable price and was wondering if ill hate not having power steering.
Well, I have had stock steering boxes in my 51, 55, and 56, and I never found them to be a problem or uncomfortable - at all. A lot of the guys are converting to the Toyota boxes for power steering.
I seem to remember (and I'm sure someone with great talent like Bob Jones or AX) will come along and expand on this, but I believe the gearing was a little different in the "Big Job" ford truck steering boxes and they are more desirable than the smaller ones. Food for thought. But I wouldn't hesitate to go back to a stock steering box and I'm just a whimpy girl (oh brother!) - Just my opinion - about the steering box.
LOL. Jules may be "just a girl", but I'm gitting to be a "weak old man" and I still like the feel of the old stocker box. I'm running bias tires just like grampa had and don't have any problems. Just takes a little gruntin' and groanin' to parallel park...slim
IMHO the best thing you could do since you already have the pump and mountingis rip out that box you have now, repair whatever is needed to restore the frame and do the Toy 4x4 PS box conversion. It bolts in and works like it was made to go in there. Biggest problem with the stock box is most of them are 50 year old version of an 80 year old design that inevitably are worn out/damaged from lack of required periodic maintainance and the mechanical advantage of the gearing requires the stock bus sized steering wheel and/or Aanold's forearms.
