oil catch can

So I bought one of these cheap cans to try out on the 460. I'm not catch can savvy but looking at the one I bought.
It has the I/O ports right next to each other, the in port has a little "plug" with holes in it.
I thought it could be opened to install a filter in it, it can't be. You stick the media in the can.
But that isn't what this post is about, just describing it.
Anyway maybe I'm overthinking this or not thinking enough but it seems to me. All this will do is suck the air from the one port to the other
since there isn't any baffle/separation really besides that 1" tall plug and the media.
I don't see how it could really let any fluid drop out. Am I wrong?

I was thinking about installing a piece of pipe on the in port and extend it down a little more.
Thinking this would at least create some separation and allow the media more dwell time to trap anything.
It's a weird size so I'm not sure if I can rig anything or if it's worth it.

What is this can going to be used for? Processing blow by from the crank case? If that's the case where your pick up is located can really make a big difference. I have few customers who use an air pump to evacuate the case and one set up used to use a catch can in the line. It never had anything to catch. On that engine the valve cover has a pipe that sticks up about 5 inches with a baffle at the bottom and in the middle so the gasses have to Z up through the tube. Works great.

Yes processing any blow by. I'm curious if I will catch anything figured it couldn't hurt any but I don't think it would catch much they way it is designed.
they sent a stainless wool pad with it and it fills the can pretty well so I guess they think that's enough to get fluid to drop out? I'm not sure I buy that completely now that its in my hands.
I didn't plan on using that but a plastic pad instead . I just don't want to jam the container full of that either.
I figured I'd take a chance on buying it and see.

With a matrix inside of the can it'll probably work fine. It might be interesting to try using a chunk of fuel cell foam as the matrix.

Well it won't hurt anything to try it. It will just be a nagging at the back of the skull if I don't collect anything. If it doesn't I'll see if I can mod it someway.

The foam is interesting. I might try it out never messed with it but it does appear it would be more effective. Could it handle the heat?

I don't think that the foam would have any trouble with that kind of heat and it might be a more effective matrix.

picture of yours
I use this, $9bucks, harbor freight, oil separator, between PCV and main vacuum port, just make sure catch can is above PCV, but below the vacuum port you use, to help catch all the blow by possible. I catch about a thimble full between oil changes. 178,000.

I picked this
up up

I almost bought one of those but the bowl concerned me and figured going metal would be better although I much prefer a visual like that.
I'm still trying to find a mounting location I'm happy with.

That looks pretty cool. I'd say that as long as the velocity can drop inside of the can that most of the oil will fall out of suspension with or without a matrix.
