I think I know the answer to my question but since I have never owned a 4x4 I felt I should ask.
I went to remove the front drive shaft during a transmission removal on my 1999 F150. I expected the shaft to be locked into the front differential. It is not. It spins freely. Tires off the ground but do not move.
If the hubs are not locked the shaft will turn and the wheels will not, in the center of the front wheels there should be the locking hubs, just turn both of them to the lock position, this locks the front wheels to the axles that the front differential turns.
This differential probably has a front axle actuator to work the front axles, It should be mounted to the differential housing and I believe its run with vacuum, check its operation with the engine running once you get the vehicle back together.

Thanks. Never heard of this. I searched online for two hours last night. Nothing. I type in Ford 4WD+ vacuum actuator and get fifty pages of leads.
I'm especially happy that I remember correctly the events of the day I picked up this truck. Transmission bad, only reverse gear. Went to back it up on the trailer and lost traction. Shifted into 4WD and crawled right up the ramps. I guess front diff. functions as it should.
Valve body and servos already removed but parking pawl is still intact. Transmission and transfer case drained. If I have the transfer case in 4WD and transmission in park, I should be able to unbolt the drive shaft?
