Hello! I'm sure this has been answered many times, but I can't seem to find any solid ones. I have a '78 F150 4wd, with a (believed to be early 70's) 460 that one of the prev. owners swapped in. We are doing a rebuild and the older headers were shot, got them off easily though, thankfully. Anyways, my question is, what is a good, but won't break the bank, shorty header that would fit? Not crazy worried about "peak performance" or sounding loud, this will be close to a daily driver. plus we can fix sound with the rest of the exhaust. I am not super familiar with exhausts, especially with engine swaps. If you have any companies or other threads you can send me, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you guys
These are L&L 79750HP. Engine is going in my '79 F150 4wd, with T18. You'll have to have custom exhaust. I've never built an exhaust system, but I'm confident I can do it, and do it well. I cut and welded pre-bends that are on the header flanges. Easy enough.
@ranger140892 First off, thats an absolutely beautiful build! But L&L is what I've seen most people saying for these trucks so that might be the way I'm going. On a side note, is that the original oil pan or replaced? I cannot find a rear sump pan to fit this engine with the 4x4. If its "aftermarket", would you mind sparing the company? thanks!
Sweiss, thank you for that. I enjoyed building it, and enjoy running it on that stand. It's gonna be a sad day when I hide it under the hood of the truck.
The oil pan is new, but a Ford part. It's what all the smart guys recommended to me for Dent 4wd, and for Fox body swap. But now that you say that, I don't personally know that it'll fit since the engine is still on the test stand. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/f...a460/make/ford
I do know that you'll need to enlarge the four corner pan bolt holes in the pan and the gasket. It was a simple task. Use a Step Bit. Late model engine blocks must have all same size pan bolts, where older blocks have two sizes. The oil pan came with one piece gasket, oil pump pickup w/ main cap bolt, and dipstick and tube. Everything but the fasteners. I did not use the dipstick and tube because of header interference. I went with a Lokar flexible setup. I made a stainless bracket to attach the dipstick tube to a header bolt. The gasket is high quality steel core with compression stops. Since all the good one piece gaskets now have compression stops, I wanted oil pan support rails like what you see on later 5.0 / 302 oil pans. I couldn't find any, so I made a set. They work very well. No oil pan seeping.
Contact fellow FTE members Doosenberry, and lafermedavid. They're farther along with their swaps. Both have 4wd's w/ manual transmissions. And they're smart guys. They and a few other 460 wise guys posted quite a lot of their knowledge in my engine build thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...460-score.html
Sweiss, a couple of little side notes on those headers. They're high quality. I did clean up the mating surfaces on the flanges a bit, but that was probably not needed and maybe even a mistake. I used dead soft aluminum header gaskets, which I love. No leaks!
And we all know that long tube headers tend to make more torque in the lower RPM ranges, which is where I drive. My engine is a 502", and will probably twist a driveshaft right off idle, but I'm not opposed to swapping in long tube headers once the engine is installed, and I can estimate clearance.
Well thank you for all of the info @ranger140892 !! I’m sure the oil pan will fit, that’s the most oem Looking one I’ve seen so far. I wish mine wasn’t shot! And as for the headers, looked up the differences between shorty vs long etc, which doesn’t matter much to me. I’m just worried about clearance and making it tidy without cutting/fabbing things. Thanks again for the info!

The L&L headers are for you then. And I'll probably keep mine too.
