So I possibly made a grave mistake. I went to prime my freshly rebuilt 390 and I spun the oil pump clockwise. No idea if the pump is ruined. Should I replace it or try and run it and see if oil pressure builds?

how long and hard did you run it? Definitely want to run it in the direction of the distributor firing rotation. If you only ran it briefly, it likely has no damage but be careful not to get filings or debris in the oil ports/crank/rods. Safe bet to remove it and inspect for damage.

I did the same thing after I got some bad advice on the interwebs.... No harm, no foul. My HV pump just about killed my cordless drill once it built some pressure. Had to pull out the big daddy!

Makes you realize why they recommend an ARP drive rod with the HV pump.

So I finished putting the engine together and ready for start. Started it up and no oil pressure, my heart dropped. Swapped gauge for a mechanical one and boom plenty of pressure. Thanks for all the input!
