If you are going to go with a high volume pump you need to increase the sump capacity and extend the pickup. Increase capacity by at least 1 qt. preferably 2. Unless you've beefed the engine up a bunch a standard pump should be more than adequate.
I installed a C9ZZ-6600-A Hi Volume Super Cobra Jet & Police Cruiser oil pump in my '65 F100 when I converted it from a 352 to a 390. Didn't have to change the pickup tube or the original 352 oil pan.
Only way it will make much difference on an FE is to also make the common FE oiling mods. You can't get much more than stock pressure through the stock FE oil pump galleys. But mods are very easy. I'm sure it's been covered at least a million times. No 2 people really do them exactly the same.
Do some reading up on HV pumps, you will find a few conflicting opinions on them. Also post this in the FE forum if you haven't already. If you decide to go HV shoot me a PM..............
I'm pretty sure I have a new std volume std pressure Melling pump I'd sell reasonable. PM me if you're interested.
I ended using a high volume std pressure in my 445. I was going to use a std/std pump but Barry at Survival said because if what I was I doing I should be using the other one.
The only way a HV OP will hurt is if you have an old race shop dude build your motor with extremely close tolerances, Oil mods out the wazoo and you leave all tanked up from a hockey game after a miracle win and rev it from a cold start on your way home and it blows the oil filter off.
Oil filters are rated at 100 pounds. This was a 302 that idled with 50 pounds after warm up. I had to take the HV OP off and swap to a stock one when I had to redo my bottom end bearings. The oil filter is on my carnage wall...
HV is rated at 15% more. Just an FYI for calculating. And price is the same. I'm pretty sure the only difference is that they have a couple more blades on the propeller.
I've never seen an FE built to idle with more than 30-35 pounds warm. If oil pressure is too high, just swap it out?
