Do you guys have a procedure for installing an FE oil pump? I'm trying to do it right now, and can't seem to work out how to line up the distributor driven shaft while holding up the pump with my fingers through a 2 inch gap above the oil pan!
When I did mine, I removed the oil pan completely. I bolted the pump on, without the pickup tube in place. Then position the pan, and install the pickup tube. This way you should have enough room to work. If you haven't ubolted the engine mounts and jacked up the engine, you may want to consider doing that too. Gives more room. The pump drive shaft can be frustrating, but I think my method may help. You may even consider pulling the dizzy, and installing it after the pump is in place. Good luck.
Pull the distribulator. That lets the drive shaft rotate freely enough to install the pump. If you're lucky, the distributor will drop back down in place with a little pressure on the hold-down while you bump the engine over with the starter... Uh, don't forget to remove the leads to the coil when bumping it over, or it may start... at least, make sure the oil is already in if you don't.
