352 FE Engine

Have been tinkering on a 352 FE in my 1966 Ford. Engine turned but wouldn’t fire.

Had issues initially getting spark to the cylinders and got that fixed but it still wouldn’t fire.

Decided it might be maybe someone tried to tune it up and got the timing incorrect. Or maybe it was low compression in the cylinders.

pulled the valve cover off and the entire valve assembly is covered in a black gritty muck. First sign of something wrong. Next I pulled the plugs on 5-8 and checked compression.

5-55psi
6-40 psi
7-0
8-0

looking like this old motor needs to be rebuilt. But before I take on a project of that magnitude, especially considering I’ve never done one, I thought I’d check the tribal knowledge here and see if it might be something easier.

That's nasty! Rebuild or new motor? Both not cheap.

Maybe stuck/broken rings or bent valves...who knows. Even if that engine did run, it very well may have clogged oil drains so it wouldn't last long. That is one horribly neglected specimen.

The fastest way to get running is a reman engine from someplace like jasper. Or sometimes you get lucky on one of the few FE engine forums and find a slightly used engine. If you're in it for the long haul, consider taking your time and finding a good and experienced FE builder.

Personally, I would pull that thing out of there and tear it down to determine just how bad it really is. You can't learn any younger. As mentioned, you can just get a replacement but if in no hurry, you could learn a whole lot and have a great adventure tearing into the existing. Of course, it all depends on what you want to do with it. It will not be cheap whichever way you go.

Thats exactly what I plan to do. Never torn one down before. Already doesn’t run, can’t make it run any less. I’m in no hurry…I’m in it for the story and experience.

My vote would for a 390, car motor. If you can find a 410/428, I would be quick on that. I have C6ME 410 in my 66 F250 CC CS. Runs like a top.

This company is in Tyler, TX. The only experience I have had with them was we put one of their short 302 blocks in an F150 back in the 1980's. Ran fine no problems.

Although I went with a different shop, I had multiple calls with the company listed above since they are down the road, and have multiple people in a group I’m in use them with great results^
