I just picked up a '68 bump that originally had a 300 according to the data plate. When I bought it the guy said it has a 390 in it but I want to verify this. It has gold valve covers and air cleaner, I am curious what FE's had that and when. Also are there any obvious casting numbers to look for, I have a 352 in my Galaxie but that is the only FE I have messed with.
Here are a few pics of it:
Since the seller claimed he bought it from the original owner and the truck is remarkably clean and original looking I don't know if there is any truth to the engine.
On a side note it starts and runs better than the transplanted 400 I have in my '72.
Yep, that's a FE! I'm not certian when Ford went to blue engine paint, but the black block with gold VC and air cleaner was stock for early to mid '60s. The road draft tube on the passenger VC is another immediate clue to the earlier engine. I think the PCV started in '66 with cars, not sure on trucks, maybe '68.
With the #1 & 4 spark plugs removed, #1 at TDC, use a soda straw to probe for the pistons. If the difference between the two is 3.5 " you likely have a 352. If the difference is 3.75" you likely have a 390. The FAQ at the top of this forum lists the different bore and stroke combinations.
Look for a casting number between the center two spark plugs, #1 intake runner. Tell us what you find...Lucky dog!
