I had new tires installed last year and had no issues with the PVD/Chrome chipping or coming off. But this was also because I made sure the tire shop was aware that the rims were in perfect condition and that I had a brand new wheel because the dealer messed up a wheel when a TPMS was replaced under warranty (dealer ordered a new wheel and I had to return the chipped one).
So as long as a tire and unmounted and remounted and the tech doesn't allow the tools to contact the rim it should be fine. I have had 3 TPM sensors replaced under warranty and also had new tires installed and the rims are still fine. I would suspect that most of the damage to rims is done by poor workmanship when tires are replaced.
Good information and seems to lean towards the fact that Ford knows the wheel coating is crap, although in your case the dealership screwed up so that seems cut and dry, but the tire shop screwed up mine. I know someone on here said it wasn't the tire shop's fault, but I don't see it that way when my wheels were perfectly fine before they put the new tires on AND contacting Ford was literally the first thing out of the guys mouth at the tire shop when I walked outside, so I feel like they had prior knowledge about this issue beforehand. I bought the truck used in 2019 and the dealership put a new set of tires on the truck the day I picked up and didn't damage the wheels! Bottom line is I still have four damaged wheels. I appreciate the other responses but no one is saying what they did to hold someone responsible for the damage. Do I go to Ford and claim the wheels are defected or should I go back to the tire shop? I feel like Ford is going to tell me to kick rocks because there's no warranty and I feel like the tire shop is going to claim Ford has a defective wheel coating and knows about it therefore releasing them from liability! All I know is my wheels weren't damaged before it went into that tire shop.
I had the same wheels on my 2017, I hated them anyway so I bought machined Ford Lariat 18" rims and sold the others. That's how I addressed it. Even if they warranty them it's still only a matter of time before the new ones do it.
The chips on my wheels happened at the tire shop. My wheels were in perfect condition when I drove into that shop. The comments about the PVD coating are answering a lot of questions though, just nothing on who's responsible.

They should have stopped at the 1st one and shown it to you to make a decision whether to proceed or not. I am going thru similar situation where the dealer damaged my 4 of my dually wheels when getting new tires installed. Been going back and forth and just today I told them I was going to turn in to my insurance. Now they just called and asked if I would accept Northstar wheels.
I recently had new tires installed on my 2017 F-250SD. When I came out to look at them I noticed chips of chrome missing from the outer edge of my wheels. This was on every wheel, a couple of them worse than the other two. The shop said Ford has had issue with this and showed me a picture of the inside of my wheels which showed obvious peeling and chipping of the chrome plating inside the wheel. The shop advised me to check on it at the dealership, but that was it. No apology. No, "we'll take care of this", nothing!! Red flags immediately went up with that being the first suggestion from the shop. I'm furious at this point, because I take care of my truck, mechanically and cosmetically. However, it was Christmas Eve and I was headed out of town so I let it go until I got back in town. I'm seeking input from other Ford truck owners with these wheels and if you have experienced the same issue. I'm getting my ducks in a row before going to the dealership. I'm trying to educate myself before I pull the trigger on taking action to get this fixed. Just some additional information I gathered from a reputable shop, modern tire changing machines don't even touch the wheels anymore, but I cannot confirm what type of tire changer the shop that did my tires has. On my list of getting my ducks in a row. Thanks in advance for any similarities anyone can offer.
I wouldn't blame the shop I've got 2017 Dually replaced my running boards under warranty twice because of bubbling chrome ...after the 2nd set they peeled FORD SAYS THATS ALL YOU GET AND I STILL HAD WARRANTY LEFT....MY aluminum wheels something started getting the chalky peeling....$85000 for a truck and its peeling in a year....Dealership calls it Chinese Chrome...
Yeah the 20" PVD Chrome wheels are made in China, or at least the replacement one I got from the dealer (in a ford box) was. But I would assume Ford gets them all from the same supplier. Kind of hard to believe the cost too, but wheels from any dealer usually are ridiculous in price.
