Hi everyone, I want to make a simple post here to advise dying/not starting trucks to get a new or re-manufactured IDM. I owned an OBS for 18 years ('97 F-350), sold it with 350k on it and its still going strong. I used to hang out at The Diesel Stop. com for ever while I owned it.
So any way, while owning my '97 for the last week before I sold it, it would not start, I replaced EVERYTHING related, IPR, CPS, GP's, GP relay, ICP, valve cover harness, fuel pump, HPOP, etc., etc. Turned out to be the IDM (driver side inner fender). I opened mine up and it was corroded inside, looked like an exposed computer laying in a dump for 18 years, salt, water, dirt, bugs, etc. I paid $118.00 for a reman., and that was it. I could have saved hundreds of hours and dollars if I would have done this swap first. So, what I'm saying....with the age of these obs trucks, your IDM is probably going to fail sooner than later. Replace it, do some research on this part and you will see what I mean, they are known to retain water too. Simple swap, 30 minutes tops. I mention this advice because I see a bunch of posts "no start/ runs rough". I'm not saying the IDM is the cure all, but once I saw the bad environment this module lives in after all the years, it became a no brainer that I over looked myself.
Definitely worth getting eyes on that IDM in a no start condition, or if DTCs point towards the IDM. If IDM or related wiring goes, often IDM codes will pop, like P1316. Or the IDM relay will quit providing power to the IDM, and you'll see P1663, P1668, P1670.
Good advise to take a look. It is too bad Ford located the IDM where it did.
Superduty IDM location below. Is this where it is on the 94.5 - 97 trucks?
