I have a long story, but I'm going to try to make it short.
My Excursion 7.3 has had the IDM replaced twice in the last 2 months. I just put one in 2 days ago from a wrecked truck and it ran great.
Today, I just got it back from getting a water pump installed and since I haven't been able to drive it much lately, we rode around town for a bit this evening.
Here's the problem, it ran fine all evening. But without warning, it starts running rough and loses power. It did it when I replaced the first IDM and it ran good for a week, then it died almost completely. When I had it scanned, it looked like the IDM again. Replaced it again, runs good, for the last 2 days. Now I have a Check Engine Light after it sputtered a bit pulling into a parking lot. I shut it off and restarted it and it got me home without incident.
I'm going to have it scanned again tomorrow, but I wondered how many people think this could be a CPS issue?
possibility?
it could be failing/or corrosion may be an issue, id pull it to see/reinstall and drive,
its a pretty cheap fix if thats the problem......
I would make sure they checked those Valve Cover Harnesses also. An injector + short to ground can fry an IDM. Or it could just be an intermittant short in the harness making it sputter.
Hey guys. I think you may have saved me a lot of headache!
I checked the harness where it runs across the valve cover, and sure enough, there was a rusty spot on the valve cover. Pulled the harness and inspected the wire and it is worn through the insulation. I put some tape around it and so far it is running great.
I will take it apart and make a better watertight repair, but I really think this is my fix.
