I had to replace the IDM about this time last year and sure enough, it fried again just this past week. I bought a reman for 250 off ebay. . . . Trucks a '97
Any Ideas as to what caused the IDM to fail? Most the people Ive talked to at shops have said this is a common problem, but two in a year? Im thinking that my injector harness might have a short or something. . . Anyone have any ideas? Thanks
I had 2 fry in my truck becuase of water. Did you get the one from Auto Computer Extange? If so they can be a little hard to deal with for warrenty problems. The biggest problem is you have to send yours in to them they test it then decide if they will send you a new one or not. That makes the truck down for a while. Also they sent me a bad one one time and I sent it back and they said it was good but it wasnt. I guess they have a test vehical there or somethin but it sure didnt work on my truck. The sent me another one and it waorks fine. I bought the one for 250 with lifetime warrenty. But i bet it is water cuasing the problem too.
I got the IDM from the same place. . .Down in Davie. . . I got it installed and no dice.
Im not sure if I should do what you had to do and send it back or try a new injector harness. The tech at the shop said he wasnt getting signal from the IDM, hence the recomendation of getting a new one. . .
Howd you check to see if yours was bad? Could the fuel pump have lost its prime from sitting for the last 4 or 5 weeks? It has been dripping slowly down the back of the engine. . . Thanks

Not sure on the fuel pump thing but I took the IDM out of my buddies truck and tried it out to make sure. Can you here the injectors fireing? Lound kindof knock/click noise? Check you Valve cover harness conectors for burnt pins. Are you getting any smoke from it? Where in Florida are you? oh and call them before you send it and see what they have to say.

Don't send it back, you need to figure out if have another problem first.
Determine the exact cause of the leaks in the valley, let us know.
Have had it scanned for codes? (I know that's difficult but would really help)
Does the tach move when cranking it?
Do you get smoke from the tailpipe while cranking?
The above is checking the CPS.
I would get a new one and replace it anyway, they are cheap and it's pretty easy to change.
$15-25 @ Ford. Keep the old until you determine the exact cause of your failure.
You may be able to keep it in the truck for emergencies.
The truck wasnt throwing any codes at the shop, the tech just said he wasnt getting signal from the IDM.
I was going to ask if theres anything else I shold check. . .Im probably going to take the valve covers off and check all the pins/wires going to the injectors. . . All my fuses are good, but what about the relays? Ill do the CPS later tonite when I get to the shop. Thanks guys.
Check the main engine wire harness were it crosses over the driver side valve cover
It is known to wear through.. that's about all I have for now.
Good Luck
The tach doesnt move and theres no smoke from the exhaust. If i get some time tonite i'll drag her into the garage and go over the wires. I miss my truck. . . Never thought Id fall for an old diesel lol. . .
so theres no relays or diodes or anything that I should check?
I unplugged the the IDM then plugged it back and she cranked up. It took a little longer than usual though. I cranked it and stopped it three seperate times and each time took a few extra seconds. . . But she runs good as usual.
IM gonna search the forum here and look for a write up on the CPS. . . Years ago when I was on the site there was a boat load of write ups, so hopefully itll be easy to find.
Ahhh, P-Stroke diesels. It could be hard to start for several reasons. Fuel leakage, bad injector o-rings, poor oil quality, bad IPR, oil airation, oil level low, bad fuel, low fuel pressure, etc., etc. I am the Poor Ba$!@&* that gets stuck fixing all the diesels at our shop, and I am now on my third cranks no start P-Stroke for the summer. They're a b!&@$.

The CPS is very easy to replace, It's located @ 10 o'clock on the harmonic damper on the crankshaft.
1 bolt and a little prying (cussing if it's stuck) But.......You really need to get a good scanner on it.
Everything suggested form this point will be a shot in the dark.
