Door Panels

I'm having to get into my doors to replace the door latch control and window regulators.
Both of them are trashed due to abuse of the handles. The PO had "glued" the window cranks on.

Anyway, it has always bothered me that these door panels look like crap, and they are fairly new from what I can tell.
The cheap plasticky look and feel is just awful. From what I've seen the originals of these from Ford were garbage as well.
Has anybody seen an authentic original set of these? Are they as bad as the repos out there?

I've often thought of replacing them with something better but I really try to maintain the OEM look in the cab and I'm not sure
if that is what I want to do. If I could find something they looks like these but is not some molded hunk of cheap plastic I would.

Ford was going for a padded vinyl look but really missed the mark INHO.

What if you get an upholsterer to lay leather over it and stitch the lines in, and use spray adhesive to keep the rest of the leather tight to the plastic

I also have, and cannot stand the reproduction ABS panels.

SMS Auto Fabrics can duplicate the factory ones, in your choice of color. They are the same ones that sell the correct factory fabrics for the seats - or, they’ll sell you a complete seatcover.

But here’s the catch: they will not be taking any more orders for the panels till much later this year. Mine that I ordered this fall won’t be made or shipped till the early spring, or so they say. I’m patient, and can wait. They get about 400.00 for the set, you’ll still need to buy the clips from Melvins. Even if I could locate an NOS set, which I cannot, they’d doubtless cost more than 400 bucks.

Another quandary.
In looking at the door without the door panel in it the holes used to insert the clips to hold the door panel trim in place appeared to be drilled, not stamped.
Are these optional for the '66 F100 or did the factory install them? The PO (or one of them) drilled them in the wrong places it appears and too large.
The holes are - 17/64 to 9/32 and the clips look to be made for 1/4 inch holes.

Anybody have an original door with holes and if so what size were the trim clip holes and maybe a pic showing the hole locations?

Well, can’t help you out with actual dimensions, but CropDuster posted a nice photo , which you can use to compare, in the following thread, post #4.

@1966F100SC Been thinking about that. Looking at the mounting mess the PO left. Holes in the wrong place etc.
Covering the old one might be the only way to go here.

Thanks
