I know 80-96 doors are basically the same, but at some point the vent windows and door panels changed. I'd like to find a nice door for my '86 with manual locks and windows, but when it's done I'd like to keep my '86 door panel and vent window. Is this even possible?
My door is rusting from the inside out. It's been blistering on the bottom for a while now, and with the door open if you look at the bottom inside it's a mess.
Yes, it can be done. I did it a few weeks ago. Check out this post I made, it will tell you what you need to do. It's really easy. You wont be able to swap the vent windows though, the old ones are rounded and the newer ones are squared but you can get your old door panel on the newer door.
Thanks. I think the hardest part is going to be finding a nice door. Unfortunatly probably nothing will match colorwise, and my old black paint still looks half decent, except the golf ball sized blister in the driver door, and the hole I poked with my finger up through the bottom.
Ok guys, don't let this thread die now. I picked up a door from a '90 bronco at the boneyard today. $40. It's even black! See my gallery for picks of the rust in the old door, and the new door with the truck.
Anyway, the new door had power windows and locks. I removed all that, the glass was broken already anyway, and someone nabbed the power window motor. The devider between the window and vent window looks wider, but it looks easy to replace with the original. Any tips to be aware of when swapping guts?
Also, this door has a moulding on the outside. I'm going to try a heat gun to get it off without hurting the paint. Any tips on this on?
The vent window and frame for 1987 and newer is wider than the 1980 to 1986, as well as the window itself being narrower.
However the guts can be swapped quite easily around, you will just have to use the old glass and hardware.
According to the interchangability guide I've seen. The door shell itself. The metal with no guts in it will fit the following,
1980 to 1996 F-150, F-250
1980 to 1997 F-250HD, F-350, F-Super Duty, F-450, F-550.
1980 to 1999 F-600, F-900
As for the glue problem, heating it may make the glue softer, however some glues become stronger with heat, cause of their chemical makeup. All I can say is good luck and....
Thanks. I got the vent window assembly out of the new door. I also used a heat gun and got the moulding off the bottom no problem. I hope the color matches ok when I put it on. At least it's black, so it shouldn't be too bad. Now I gotta find some later sun visors!

I'm replacing the doors on my '80 with doors from a '92. The '92 doors have no interior panels (don't want 'em anyway) and power windows which I want to convert to manual. I'm sure I saw a thread about this some time ago but can't find it in searching. Anyone here got that information?
