I scheduled a private inspection (which dealer agreed to) and he sent me these photos. It’s a 2005, 6.0, with 160k miles.
Is the rust concerning? The dealer wants me to deposit “hold money” for inspection which I’m fine with if rust isn’t an issue. Thank you for y’all help!
from what i can see in the pics at least, it looks like surface rust which isnt a big deal, but i am not a rust expert, im sure someone else who is will chime in, where is the truck, and where has it been? Is it from a salt state?
Have the dealer send pictures of the common rust areas. Rockers, inner rockers, second row lower C pillar (dogleg area), top of wheel well arches, inside lower rear quarters, all 4 door bottoms and inside front fender lower corners by the front doors. It’s a Limited, so that plastic cladding can hide a fair amount of rust from the casual observer, you need to search around under and behind the plastics to look for rust.
Are you well versed in the 6.0 PSD and it’s known issues and proper care and feeding?
The rear diff cover has a pretty good amount of moisture on it, could be a rust pin hole or maybe even brake fluid, with the frame surface rust shown the brake lines could be suspect.
yes, my Dad is trying to talk me into a higher mileage 7.3 😬... my thought process was with the lower price of this 6.0, bulletproof-Ing it would still come out less expensive and with less miles than the cost of a 7.3. I will definitely stay on top of fluids and maintenance. Or would you guys also recommend a higher mileage (230,000+) 7.3 like my Dad does.

Fluids and Maintenance is not what the 6.NO runs on, it actually runs on spare parts, fuel is just used for lubrication.
First the turbo will go, then the head studs will go, then your hpop will pop, your injectors will get stingy with fuel, or dump way too much on each cycle, and then the cycle will repeat.
6.0's can be made to be reliable, but its an uphill battle, during a snow storm, pulling a trailer, in the mudd, with bald tires, with the wife and kids in the back saying, is it done yet? is it done yet?
in short, they are cursed. If you buy a 6.0 that is not bulletproofed, remember diesel parts and overhauls get expensive fast, plan in 5-10k in overhaul work to it into your budget, with any luck, it will come out less, but it could go over as well.

As said above, the 6.0s issues aren’t kept at bay by vigilant fluid maintenance. I would strongly advise doing some research on the 6.0 prior to considering a purchase.
What is your intended use of your future EX? Is a Diesel engine required or just desired?
Go on youtube and watch a few 6.0 diagnose and repair videos especially by dieseltech Ron. You can find the same injector problems with the 7.3 so I went with the 6.0 and I am happy.
The rust shown in the pictures is not concerning.
When evaluating an excursion look for rust on the rocker panels.
Also look for rust behind the rear wheel wells on the floor.
(Pull up the rear carpet to look)
Rocker panel rust is very concerning.
