Gasser advice needed....

Hey Folks,
Once we've owned an Excursion, we always seem to want one in the stable at all times. I did the buying-selling thing twice, and still can't seem to get enough of it. So, I am back on the search again. This time, I am looking for gassers. Though I loved the 7.3 in both my previous trucks, I really do not need one. I remember @WE3ZS had specifically pointed this out to me in 2016

I found these in my search so far that I'd like to possibly
1. 2005 SSV with a 5.4L, Was an Atlantic City, NJ Police Interceptor in its past life, 250K miles (4.10 gears) - Cheapest
2. 2005 Ltd with a 6.8V10 - Farthest from me (4.10 gears) - Priced a bit high IMO
3. 2003 Ltd with a 6.8V10 - Closest to me (4.30 gears)
4. 2005 Ltd with a 6.8V10 - Lowest mileage, Most expensive (4.30 gears)

Looking for advice from the group on these and other tips to use in my search. 5.4 or 6.8? This will be a long distance traveler carrying people and lots of stuff, no plans to tow. I need something reliable to be able to make a trip to Alaska or Ushuaia!!

#1 I wouldn't even consider it, rusty with larger than stock tires on a 5.4 and kind of high-ish miles.
#2 I couldn't view this one, I don't have a face page. But no 6.8s ever came with 4.10 gears, could have been change I guess.
#3 This one looks pretty clean but would need a good thorough rust inspection underneath of course, price seems line line with current truck prices. Obviously try to get it closer to 10K if it checks out clean.
#4 I want to sell my EX to this guy if that’s what he thinks a clean rust free one is worth!

Do some southern searches Prakash.

the 5.4 is a no go, other then that just fully inspect them and understand that significant rust is effectively slow cancer, and there is no cure.

I did some research here on FTE and have come to that conclusion as well. Oh, and I've been on this forum long enough to know not to buy another vehicle that has rust, even it if was in stage1 of its growth

Though it can be done, it would be a long drawn out process to get it titled/registered from out of state.

Thanks for the pointers Tom. #3 has a lot of things favorable to my search conditions. I'll try to check it out and report later. The $$ number on #4 are about where a lot of people are pricing those low mileage rigs at. Have you seen this? The search has for a replacement has just begun. I will be leaving for India in a couple of weeks and back in Feb. So, final decisions & purchase won't happen any time soon. I started my initial search within 250-500 miles from me and will eventually go further south and west.

There's nothing wrong with a 5.4, but in a 3.5 ton truck it's constantly under a similar load to an F150 that's pulling a trailer. That might be OK for a mom-mobile, but if it has been doing considerable towing you really have to question how much life it has left.

I've seen #3 on at least 2 other sites and have to wonder why it's still on the market. It looks like a beautiful Ex, but has it really been maintained that well or was it polished up for sale? Check it out very carefully.

No way I'm spending that on #4 Granted, we're a long ways past it being new, but in 2015 you could almost buy a 6.8 Ex for what they want today for that 16 year old.

It does give a little eerie feeling looking at the pictures and then the Carfax report. The previous owner seemed to have been a magnet for accidents. 2 out 3 were in a matter of weeks.

Any reason you are not considering a 4x2?

Here in VA, we do need the 4wd occasionally. So, it is nice to have the ability. Also, I have travel plans taking me far west and up north, when this may become a necessity.

I've had 2 RWD cars in the past - 2001 Mercedes Benz C class and 2009 BMW 750i. Both were awesome cars in the dry months, but absolutely useless in slick/snow/icy conditions. I've had a spin out in both of them. So, after that I decided on having 4wd ability, or at least front wheel drive, on all the vehicles that I would use regularly. My daughter's Prius is more reliable than either of those 2 cars in these road conditions

Don’t be afraid of a couple of wrecks if they were small. Mine had dented up bumpers from 2 fender benders in Car Fax.
Sorta depends on what you want from the vehicle. If you want a perfect resto find one that has a clean car fax.

If these low mileage Excursions start to get into that range (over $40,000) I could change my mind and sell mine. Told my wife when the F350 Dually's (1-3 year old) come down in price in few years when RV prices crash I might think about listing my 2001 Excursion with 80,000 miles, 7.3 Diesel, 4x4. As I go through it and update several items I'm getting more money in it. Going to change all frontend parts including steering box and front shocks. Going to add Air Bags to the rear with a compressor and Train Air Horns. Installing an after market stereo with 9' screen now. Still debating the best way to seal / update the roof to get it to last. I'm not a fan of a roof rack (I'm 64 and not raising 4-5 kids or I would be) but will probably put one back on after finishing the roof and maybe add a basket. Dan
