It's called a Coupling Shaft. Here's one very similar to what Red60 and 654x4 posted - Green Sales had this one for a 1965 F100/F250 4x4 and 1966 F250 4x4 with New Process 435 4 speed transmission and a divorced Dana 24 dual range transfer case. The part number varied by transmission (3 on-the-tree or 4 speed) and brand/model of transmission across the years. Coupling shafts were also used as the front most shafts of multi-piece driveshafts and between rear axles in some of the big trucks.
I finally got this truck started and drove it around the block. As i pulled into the driveway the driveshaft came out. I dont think i tightened it all the way. Is this the intermediate shaft when I order u joints? I have done u joints 20 years ago but do not remember how the come out of the yoke. Any ideas?
There s/b a snap ring on the top or the bottom of the caps that have to be removed. I can't quite tell from the pictures if it's on the bottom but I don't see it on the top like the other shaft end U joint is. Once the snap rings are off, you'll need to press it out in one direction to remove a cap, then press it in back in, and out the other side to remove the other cap. Assemble in reverse order.
Use should be able to use your vise and some sockets to press in the new one. Best not to hammer them in as it can damage them. After installed it should swivel freely, if it doesn't, tap it one way or the other and check it again. Good luck.
