so i'm using a 4R70w in my truck, and the trans came with a converter. it was pulled from a running / driving car. would you guys use the used converter or just buy a reman? they're not terribly expensive, but that $130 or so could go into another area of the truck. i've heard use it and don't, and i'm not a trans guy by any stretch.
I would never put in a used converter unless it was one I had been running and it had no issues. If you rebuilt the trans I sure would not put on a used converter mine or others with old oil & possible trans material inside, good way to kill your new rebuilt trans.
If you bought a complete trans with converter and are installing it as is, I'd reuse the converter. If you rebuild the trans don't reuse the converter.
There are at least 4 different stall speeds for 4R70W transmissions. Won't make too much difference now if you are using the old one but if it is a "lower stall" converter you may find it to be a little sluggish depending on your engine. I am running a 4R70W behind my 390 (soon to be 445) so I went with the low stall converter from the 5.4 l trucks to match the torque curve of the new motor. The lower stall converters also have a lower torque multiplication which should allow the 4R70W with some upgraded components to survive what the 445 will produce. Here is a good link that can help you match a converter to your combo if you decide to rebuild in the future - https://forums.tccoa.com/955-4r70w-t...onverters.html
