Exclamation Help!! Sudden mechanical issue!

OK, so I was on my way home just now and, as I got off the interstate, I slowed down then accelerated. When I tried to accelerate my truck did something weird. I can’t tell if the transmission is slipping, or if it’s a fuel delivery issue. At a low level power input (I.e. Half throttle or less), it does just fine, but once I try to really get on it it just sits there and sputters. I can’t tell if the fuel's just not getting there or if the transmission is slipping. Can one of you guys help me understand what’s going on with it or give me some insight on how to troubleshoot it? P.S. - this is my DD so it's a little urgent for me to figure this out quick

Fuel pump! Get a pressure gauge on there and tuck it under the windshield wiper so you can see it while you are driving, and go drive and make it happen.

I bet you a burger and frys the pressure drops out under load but pops back up when you let off.

That **** has happened to me in 3 different cars now, ford pumps don't just fail instantly, they seem to get weaker and weaker, and cause gremlins before they go out completely.

Could also be a serious clog in the fuel filter, but the pump is more likely.

Dude fuel starvation, i redouble my previous statements, replace the filter, and test that fuel pressure immediately.

Also, was it a long drive that led to the problem. When a pump is getting worn out, it will perform worst on a tank that is lower on fuel, and usually after 30+ minutes of driving, but the problem may go away for short drives when the truck is cool

I would do the pump and filter, nearly 300K.. unless you KNOW it's been done recently.. But still the most likely culprit.

I agree on fuel starvation. Change the fuel filter first though, it's much easier and cheaper. If that doesn't fix it start shopping for a new Motorcraft fuel pump, be sure to verify if your EX is a Cali spec or not as they take a different pump assembly.
When my fuel pump died it was sudden and complete with zero warning like you are seeing.

If the transmission is slipping RPMs will race up, the engine will not sputter.

Sorry I've been busier than a one-legged man in an *** kicking contest. Starting a business is work! I added a new filter and some better clamps and haven't had it return. But I also had to refill the tank, so I'm not sure if my original problem is being masked by the tank being full, or if it was really just a filter issue. I have a new pump here, and one of these Saturdays it will get installed, along with the Hutch and Harpoon mods that most of us do to our fuel tanks when given the opportunity.

Jack, your EX is a gasser, so the Hutch mod is not really a thing, that’s for modifying the fuel pickup foot on 7.3 diesels. And the Harpoon mod can be done but don't expect any significant change from doing it, gas doesn't foam up when filling nearly as much as diesel fuel does, thats the issue the mod was designed to address. Nipping the vent tube shorter inside the tank may allow for a little more gas at a fill up, but I'm not positive on that. I've had my tank out twice, once for a pump replacement and passed on doing the mod.

i haven't had an issue with mine filling it up to the top, nor with fueling the engine, i figure eventually i will have to do the pump, so im investigating my own path, which may or may not involve an upgraded pump, i have to look into flow numbers though, for the Mustang GT world, a SVT Focus pump was the mod of choice because it was a boost from the stock pump due to being intended for a forced induction vehicle, and was a near direct swap with only minor adjustments needed. The V10 is more fuel demanding than a GT, but where it stands versus the SVT Focus will have to be seen, and where the factory new pump from the Ex lands as well. People had great success using the SVT Focus pumps in stock and even heavily moded setups because it fit both fuel ranges.
