So I did my first fuel filter change yesterday in my 'new to me '18 F350 Platty Diesel. No real problems and went pretty easy...but....I opened the valve to drain the separator and let it drain while I was doing the other filter and stuff and the damed thing drained out 4 gallons of fuel. I wasn't prepared for that much and I used an older dirty container. For future reference, do most of you save the fuel and pour it back in or just pitch it? Oh and BTW I didn't even take a diesel bath.
'18 and up should not have this happen. The manual says that approximately a half gallon will drain out. You didn't happen to open your fuel cap did you?
Earlier build '17 would drain if you were above 1/4 tank or some number. On those trucks you always wanted to be almost empty before changing the filter. My late build '17 didn't have that problem.. So Ford changed it sometime during the '17 model year. So that's my guess. What year is your truck?

OP profile shows '18'.
My early build '16' doesn't do this a quart or so that's it but then maybe it was below a 1/4 tank and I got lucky.
Hmmmm, that is weird. Yes it is an '18. I had just filled the truck up with fuel the evening before. I used an old 16 quart waste oil container and it was plum full when it stopped. Maybe it was somehow siphoning it out of the tank. Next time I will wait until the truck is about 1/4 trank before I do it.
I have a 17 so I am very familiar with this issue. Could it be that you created an opening in fuel system when you started working on the filter under the hood?

Yes I did. I pulled the filter under the hood and changed it while the other was draining.

it is siphoning. Another member suggested opening up the screws and cracking the seal slightly before draining to disrupt the vacuum. I did it while it was draining and it stopped after a couple of quarts. I have a 17 job 2. I definately had more than a quarter tank in my Titan tank.
