I'm putting my 55 away in storage for the winter. I am getting the starter rebuilt. I've removed the starter on my 54 probably 3 times but it's been a while. So I need a quick refresher so I can get it off quickly since I won't be at home.
Any quick tips? 3 bolts, correct? Of course remove the cables. Easier working from the top or underneath the truck? Anything else? Thanks.
you better work from underneath the truck, otherwise the exhaust system blocks the way. If you have stock exhaust (I guess you do) the starter should come free easily downward. Since I have the rams horn I had to remove the first part of the pipe to get the starter out. I prefer to disconnect the battery at first, then removing the cables from the starter and in the last step the bolts (2 or 3 depending what starter you have). Please take care with the pinion when removing or installing the starter! Thats the most vulnerable part of the starter.
I put a stud on the top bolt. I leave the stud in there for next time. That way putting it back on makes it easier. I don't have a lift so I am on my back fighting all the elements.
For transmissions I will cut the heads off 2 bolts, cut a slot on top of each one and you take one out a time and the alignment is so much easier.
I do the same for head bolts, it takes all the fighting out of it. Ok I'll stop
